Saving the planet from global warming is the usual aim of international and local environmental organizations all over the world. Various media campaigns from the television, radio, print and the internet are seen every now and then. No matter how attractive or persuasive these information materials are, they still can’t sink into our minds easily.

But what if a young beautiful lady standing on her high-heels starts talking about saving the Earth? That would definitely catch our attention. Now we know why the Miss Earth pageant has been an effective channel in promoting environmental awareness to all kinds of people regardless of their race, religion and belief.

Is Miss Earth’s charismatic appeal enough? Definitely not, it’s just the initiating factor for us to listen and pay attention. What makes us pay attention more is hearing a beautiful woman talking about various environment matter. Moreover, every word she says is somehow a reason of interest for us to catch.

When a lady is crowned Miss Earth, it immediately gives her the public authority to speak about protecting the environment. But of course, not every woman can be Miss Earth, there are certain factors that would make her one.

How is Miss Earth chosen?

The search begins with the national level competitions. More than 120 countries have Miss Earth franchise and conducts national competitions with environmental activities on the side. National competitions are subject to Miss Earth Committee’s rules and are strictly monitored to assure that there was a fair and just competition. All the national winners automatically qualify as Miss Earth international finalist, unless disqualified by the Miss Earth Committee based on its qualifying rules.

The international competition for Miss Earth, which is usually held in Manila, Philippines, is a month-long event wherein all of the qualified national candidates will engage in not just swimsuit and gown competitions but environmental and charitable activities. There, they will have environmental seminars and tasks that they will bring home and disseminate to the citizens of their countries.

Miss Earth’s preliminary scoring system is very different from other international competitions. The judges and Miss Earth Committee primarily looks into the environmental knowledge and awareness of the candidate. The personality, attitude and confidence are also included in the judging.

After the semi-finalists have been chosen, another round of competition is staged for the finals night. This is where the finalists undertake swimsuit, evening gown and interview competitions in front of a live audience. Thereafter, the final four will be selected and are required to answer the mind-breaking final question. But it is not just the answer on the final question that determines who has to be Miss Earth, but also the over-all Miss Earth factor that is somewhere inside one lady.

As soon as the new Miss Earth walks away with great prizes, international fame and an instant celebrity status, she is as well about to engage in various environmental talks and literally get involved in earth-saving activities and campaigns. To sum it up, what comes along being Miss Earth is not just walking on runways and visiting charitable institutions, but a great responsibility to speak up her mind and stand against any harm her planet is experiencing and about to experience.
